Actually, one of the times (we were lucky to be able to do multiple trips!) we went down the Grand Canyon on a raft, the trip had several geologists on it! I think we drove them crazy pestering them with questions.

The BLM handout on the river has a geology section, so I can tell you that the tall banded sandstone cliffs are of Entrada Sandstone formed in the Jurassic era from sand dunes during the dry climate of 200 million years ago. The whitish caps on them is the Todlito Formation which is white gypsum beds over gray limestone layers, from the evaporation of a large salty lake which covered this area about 160 million years ago.
