We did have some issues at our town meetings about where e-bikes should be allowed and where not, but since I live in a community with a lot of relatively well-off older people, the pro-ebike contingent is quite large. Yet we also have a lot of serious pro cyclists - they weren't the ones complaining about e-bikes, to be honest. There's still some tension about e-bikes on mtb trails, but we've got a pilot program at one area that is apparently working pretty well, so I suspect the eventual outcome will be class 1 (no throttle, 20mph assisted limit) legal everywhere.
Like I said, I still get "you're cheating!" but it's never acrimonious, it's always amused.
