I should have listened to zadcat. Instead, I rented Dogma. A number of funny lines, a number of thought-provoking lines, but overall a fairly stupid movie. And Alan Rickman looked ugly and old.
Well, you know - Rickman isn't a pretty boy. When he played a romantic lead (in Truly, Madly, Deeply) they tried to gussy him up with a mustache and it looked awful. He seems to do best in odd roles like Snape, the actor playing the alien in Galaxy Quest, the villain in Die Hard, Metatron - although I have a pleasant memory of him as Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility where he uses That Voice to considerable romantic effect. In fact, I recommend S&S as an antidote if you didn't like him in Dogma.
