crossing pine

I don't have a lot to say, so I'll just link to the Flickr photoset. Our goal this trip was to get into the upper valley of Rincon La Osa, a high valley that runs from the Continental Divide to the Pine River. (Which I am crossing in the photo above. That is a grimace, not a grin, because that river is very recent snowmelt.) It took two days to get there; we stayed there a day and dayhiked up to Gunsight Pass on the Divide, and then it took two days to hike out by a slightly different route (on the way in we went via Divide Lake, on the way out via Granite Lake, but the trails rejoined shortly after the lakes). We saw lots of deer and elk, but too far away for decent photos. Britt fished a lot. The weather mostly sucked, but when it was nice, it was lovely. Um. Not a particularly exciting trip report, sorry. :-) But it was awesome to get away from people and into the mountains again.

Nice pix! I LOVE using PicLens plugin for FF to view your albums..have you tried it?

I'm headed up Monday for a week crawling around the passes in Ouray and Silverton.

Yes! PicLens is very cool.

A couple of years ago we and some friends did that...we were gonna hike but it rained a lot. We ended up going down Poughkeepsie Pass between Silverton and Ouray - I was DAMN glad it wasn't OUR truck (the other two guys were driving). But you know, if you like that sort of thing... :-)

Going UP is the hard part. I am trying it this year.

It's not bad if your truck is built for it.

I plan on stopping more and taking more pix and checking out stuff..for instance below that hard part at Pough. at the base of the shale hill is a BEAUTIFUL waterfall..getting to it is tough though at that elevation, at least for me ;( A 50' walk at 13k is *tough*..I admire people who RUN it.

Hee, I'd rather walk that road than drive it! Have fun.

Oh, how gorgeous! Looks like a perfect summer trip -- though haha, I generally do my vacations lazier than y'all do.

Most people do! But actually, I had a lot of time to read - read most of Margaret Atwood's The Blind Assassin while Britt was fishing, or while hanging out, or while we lounged around in the tent waiting for the rain to just STOP already, GODDAMMIT.

I can also highly recommend backpacking as a way to eat a lot and still lose weight, or at least not gain any. Nothing to ramp ye old metabolism up like carrying a backpack around.

Oh, great photos. I especially like the waterfall. Some of the other pics remind me of the South Island of NZ. :-)

Thank you! And wait until I get the photos off the camera from this past weekend. If they turned out, they'll be awesome.
