Yep, it's an Open Source fork of the LJ code, started by some people (some of whom worked for LJ) who got pissed off at livejournal's handling of some user issues, their abandonment of Brad's promise to not have advertising (and the obnoxiousness of the ads they implemented), and their removal of some users and communities having to do with media fandom. I can point you to more details privately, if you want.
I left LJ for DW last April when I realized the advertising barrage my friends and family who were not on LJ were being subjected to when looking at my journal. I had a "basic" account which was the grandfathered-in ad free account - but LJ re-interpreted that to mean "we don't show you ads on your own account or other basic accounts when you're logged in, but everything else is free game." Free accounts at DW are ad-free, but I decided to pay for a year just because I appreciated their philosophy of service.
I have DW invite codes if you (or anyone else) wants to create an account, by the way!
