Maybe there is some of that, although I would think they would be going to the mountains rather than the desert. I know that a big part of it is some German TV series on travel which went to the North Coyote Buttes (the more pattern-y pictures in the Flickr set I linked to are of the South Coyote Buttes, similar but not quite as uniformly spectacular, apparently) and filmed a special in which they pronounced that "you must see this before you die", and it was very popular and released on DVD and all the Germans watched it and are following that dictum.
