They are not as big as thistles! (And not as prickly.) They are usually called Indian Paintbrush, although I think these particular ones are a closely-related variety. A very common flower in our mountains.
This area btw is about 3/4 of the way toward Silverton, which is where the tourist train I am recommending goes. The wildflowers will be gone when you are here, but there will hopefully be aspen and oak leaves in color, and snow on the mountain tops.
