I have been following the national do-not-call list kerfuffle with interest but no urgency, since Colorado has a statewide list and law (for which I am profoundly grateful).

Then I read in the paper that if the judge's injunction is upheld, the telemarketing organizations will use this to attempt to overturn Colorado's law on grounds of unconstitutionality. So I guess I have a bigger stake in it than I had thought.

Personally, I agree that exempting political and charitable organizations makes the law a bit dodgy. I wish they were all prohibited from calling.

There should be a do-not-call registry for awkward acquaintances. Tired of that creepy guy asking you out? Just put him on your do-not-call registry!

Living on the boat and not having a phone other than a cell phone (which only worked when we were in the US) really spoiled us. We considered not getting a phone at all when we moved ashore, but needed one to have our DSL set up.

DSL requires a phone line, not a phone.

I pretty much just don't answer my phone anymore when it rings.
I mostly let the answering machine answer it.

And if I do answer it, and it is someone trying to sell
me something (or otherwise get my money), I say "no thanks",
and hang up ... usually in about 3 seconds.

Another thing I noticed about telemarketer calls ... there is
always about 3 seconds between the time you pick up,
and the time they come onto the line (I think it has to do
with their computers switch you over to one of their representatives).

So if I pick up and say "hello", and nobody responds immediately,
I just hang-up. Or I'll wait a second to see if the voice that
eventually comes on the line is recognizable ... then hang up
as soon as I hear a "hello" that doesn't sound familiar.
But at that point I'm 99% sure that it won't be anyone I know,
so I've already getting ready to hang-up.

One thing I really need is a phone with a switch on it,
so I can turn the ringer off. Especially a programmable one,
so I can make sure the ringer is turned off at certain points
during the day (like dinner), when I'm in no mood for answering the
phone, no matter who they are.
