I've gone hiking a lot in parks (some of which have really steep hills, but they're not anything like a class 4, which I've always wanted to try) because there have never really been any mountains in my area that I've been able to get to (you know, me being the poor student without a car. :P).
Of course, reading things like, "a misstep would have meant a quick 500-foot descent" makes me think that I should probably stick to those nice easy hills where, even though they're steep enough to send you sprawling down 500 feet, wouldn't make you fall 500 feet.
