me me meme
Dec. 31st, 2002 01:28 pm1. I was born in Washington, DC.
2. Longer ago than most people think.
3. I had a full head of hair when I was born.
4. I still do.
5. My parents are still married to each other.
6. All of my long-term relationships have been with people whose parents are still married to each other.
7. I think this is significant.
8. I got married at 27.
9. I'm still married to the same person.
10. Happily.
11. I don't have children.
12. I have never wanted to have children.
13. I don't dislike children.
14. But I'd appreciate it if yours would behave themselves.
15. I have two brothers, both younger than me.
16. My family is Jewish.
17. I am an agnostic.
18. Tending towards atheism.
19. I am a registered Democrat.
20. But I have definitely become more conservative with age, although as I started out as nearly a Socialist, this only puts me about in the center now.
21. I follow politics with interest, and am moderately politically active.
22. My biggest political hot button is environmental protection.
23. I have lived in Maryland, Massachusetts, California (for a summer only), and Colorado.
24. I also lived for over three years on a sailboat, traveling.
25. I have been in every US state except for Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Minnesota, Montana, the Dakotas, and Oregon.
26. I have been in 20 to 25 foreign countries, depending on what you consider "been in" to mean.
27. I got my ears pierced for the first time when I was about 21 years old.
28. One hole in each ear.
29. I haven't worn earrings in several years, though, and I suspect the holes have grown closed.
30. My favorite flavor of ice cream is mint chocolate chip.
31. But only the natural kind such as Breyer's, never the icky green stuff.
32. I don't like Oreo cookies.
33. I use Tom's of Maine toothpaste.
34. When I was 26, I had a bad accident on my bicycle and woke up in the hospital.
35. Because of this accident, most of my upper teeth are artificial.
36. I am mightily impressed by modern dentistry.
37. The only other major accident I have had was that when I was about 23 I got hit by a car while I was riding my motorcycle, and broke my foot.
38. I don't ride a motorcycle any more, not because of the accident but because if the weather is nice enough to ride, I'd rather be on a bicycle.
39. I have never bought a car new.
40. Or a motorcycle new, for that matter.
41. But I have owned two motorcycles and three cars over the years, not counting the vehicles my husband and I considered "shared".
42. At the moment, I own (share) a pick-up truck, a small RV, and a sailboat.
43. I don't own a television.
44. I don't have a very large collection of CDs.
45. One reason for this is that I resisted the LP-to-CD changeover for a ridiculously long time.
46. I don't actually listen to much music. It used to be more important to me when I was younger.
47. I read a lot.
48. I read very fast. This is because my dad taught me how to read at an extremely young age, so when all my peers were learning to read in school, I was learning to read faster.
49. Everywhere I have lived, other than the boat, I have subscribed to the local newspaper.
50. I love words, wordplay, and word games.
51. I think I have a moderate gift for languages.
52. But I have not exploited it much, partly because I was not raised bilingual or forced to learn other languages while I was young enough to be good at it.
53. I can communicate reasonably well in Spanish, particularly after a few weeks of brush-up immersion.
54. In addition to Spanish, I have taken courses in Hebrew, Chinese, and German.
55. But I can't say much in any of those languages any more.
56. I also know a few phrases each in French, Arabic, and the language of the Panamanian indigenous Kuna.
57. Not to mention BASIC, FORTRAN, perl, and html.
58. My undergraduate degree is in physical science, which is sort of a minor in three sciences instead of a major in any one.
59. I have a master's degree in meteorology.
60. I worked "in my field" for ten years.
61. I am currently unemployed, or rather, self-employed, as a freelance writer.
62. I think I have a moderate gift for writing.
63. I was not very athletic as a child or teen.
64. I got seduced into exercise by a college boyfriend who was an avid cyclist.
65. Now I'm kind of a jock, although strictly in individual-type sports.
66. I don't think I'm much of a team player, either literally or figuratively.
67. I have competed in about a dozen triathlons, including a national championship which I qualified for in a regional event.
68. I stopped doing triathlons shortly after moving to Colorado, because the people were much more athletic and I moved from being "reasonably good" to "back of the middle of the pack".
69. I don't like doing things I'm not reasonably good at.
70. I'm reasonably good at a lot of things.
71. I'm not extremely good at anything.
72. I have done two century rides (100 miles on a bicycle).
73. I might do more in the future; I like to ride a lot, but I'm just not big on the organized event thing.
74. I prefer road biking to mountain biking, but I do both.
75. Running used to be my least favorite part of triathlons, but now I'm getting into it and am even considering doing a marathon next fall.
76. I used to lead 5.9 and follow about 5.10b rock climbing.
77. I don't climb any more because I don't live near a convenient place to climb, but I'd love to get back into it.
78. I am a reasonably good oarsman on a river raft, although I'm out of practice.
79. I am a reasonably good swimmer.
80. I am a reasonably good skier.
81. I prefer cross-country skiing to downhill, but I do both.
82. I can free-dive (snorkel) to about 50 feet.
83. I am a reasonably good spearfisher.
84. My weight has not fluctuated outside a 20-pound range in the last 20 years.
85. I am of exactly average height for an American woman, 5'4".
86. I have very skinny hips.
87. I have very cold hands and feet. Especially feet.
88. My eyes are blue.
89. And extremely nearsighted.
90. I wore contact lenses from the time I was 13 until about the age of 30, but I went back to glasses because I started developing astigmatism and was having problems with contacts anyway.
91. I get migraine headaches about five times a year.
92. I have occasional allergy problems.
93. I used to be allergic to cats, but I think I got over it by being a cat owner for a few years.
94. I'm not really a pet person, but I prefer cats to dogs.
95. I believe that most people are basically good.
96. I believe that my greatest gift is intellect.
97. I believe that my greatest flaw is laziness.
98. I am easily distracted.
99. I am easily amused.
100. I am surprised it was this easy to come up with 100 things about me.
