I haven't mentioned it here, but I've been rehearsing for another play - we were going to do Twelve Angry Men the last two weekends of this month. Operative words: 'were going to do'. I just got a call from the director saying that they have just found out that the publisher has withdrawn all public performance rights.

I was off book, and everything. (I was Juror #4, the calm, rational, classy and wealthy stockbroker. The third or fourth largest role in the play.)

*cries*

ETA: I just got a phone call from the guy who was Juror #3 (one of the two largest roles) saying that he was really impressed by me and hopes we can work together in the future. I am torn between being incredibly flattered and wondering if he was hitting on me. :-)

oh, that's awful! Isn't there some sort of grace period for when time and money has already been invested in a production? Argh!

Aw, damn. :-( Did they give any reason why the publisher suddenly said no go?

I wish! The director has promised to investigate further, but he's about, well, twelve times as depressed as I am about it.

Nope - just that the copyright holder notified them that the rights had been withdrawn. I'm hoping we get more info soon, and hoping even more that it works out that we can do it, because, man! Classic courtroom drama!

I know! Bizarre! I have no clue. We are going to all go drinking tomorrow instead of rehearsing. Waah.

get your homies together and produce Ayn Rand's Night of January Sixteenth. by the time you're through with *that* you should all be purged of your courtroom drama jones.

it's a poor substitute, but that's kind of the point.

Better yet, buy the rights to produce the Rand play, and do a really campy sendup.

Set to music.

There is another jury play -- very similar to Twelve Angry Men, except the defendant is a woman, definitely guilty of murder, but many of the jurors are greatly reluctant to convict her for various and sundry reasons, including women's issues. I saw it on TV a few years ago, but I can't remember any other details. If you could find out what it was, perhaps you could do that play instead?

GRAAR! I'm sorry--that must be so disappointing!

It seems really bizarre that they'd pull the rights now, though, because the Broadway production closed about a year ago. Makes sense that they pull them during the production run, but why NOW? What awful timing.

That's horrible! Sounds like it would have been a really cool role, too. Sorry it happened that way, and I hope something else fun comes along soon. The drinking-instead-of-rehearsing get-together sounds nice, at least!

Argh! How frustrating!

I offer you lots of hugs as condolences--you know, if you ever want to come to Canada to collect them.

And maybe Juror #3 was hitting on you because he was very impressed?

Well, we got more info last night, and it turns out that the problem was partly that the publisher didn't actually have that the rights had been pulled on their website, and partly that our producer didn't actually call to obtain the rights until just a few days ago. So, both parties at fault. But, waaaah.

Follows the dramatic interactions of actors who have just found out that they cannot perform the play that they have been rehearsing.
