This was going to be the year that Britt and I got new backpacks, since mine is 15 years old and his probably more than 20, and each of them weighs about twice what a modern light pack weighs. So when we went to the Outdoor Retailer summer show, we tried out bunches of them, settled on a brand that we 1) liked a lot and 2) could get a pro deal on, and now each of us has a new Deuter backpack.

Also at the OR show, I won a backpack from GoLite (well, Britt won it, but it was a women's model, so it's mine).

Then a couple of days ago, I was notified that I had won an after-show drawing from womenspecific.com, and where should they send my new Lafuma backpack?

Then last night, we went to see a new rock climbing film, and various gear was given out for correct answers to trivia questions, and Britt won a new Osprey backpack.

Yeah, we got new packs this year, all right. Whee!

This is fabulous bounty indeed!

Those of us who grapple with a fierce moth-to-flame attraction to backpacky, compartmenty, luggage-ish things really need pictures, though. Or at the very least, a thorough, loving description of at least one of those packs. :)

Hee, I shall have to line them all up and photo them. Oh, and I went running in my running skirt yesterday and thought about getting a picture, but I came back and took it off to shower before Britt even was out of bed. Maybe next time.

Oh, yes please. A few years ago (1997?), I picked up a hiking pack for a weeklong trip to England, going all over the country by train. To this day, it is still my favorite way to pack for any trip, no matter how domestic.

...and it's about time to buy a new one.

(the next one will be color-coordinated with my cat, omg!)

Now you need a special backpack rack. Or a larger backpack to hold all of them!

So which one is the bestest?

How much do modern packs weigh compared to ones from 15-20 years ago?

I'm wondering ... I think my backpack must be getting up there.

Although the best thing for me to do is loose more body weight:
so far I've done pretty good this year: in January I weighed in
at 254 (yikes!), but I've so far shed about 35 pounds of that.

But I should shed another 30.

Hee, everything needs to be color-coordinated with the cat. We should start making tabby furniture.

Hee, yes! A backpack of backpacks!

And now this makes me think of Snack Attack:

I feel like Kojak sitting in a Cadillac
I gotta eat, I gotta eat a flapjack
A stack, a rack, a six-pack, Jack
Just call me Jack Kerouac
Click-clack, open up the hatchback
I could eat a bubble car or a packamack
Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, Big Mac
Good God, it's a snack attack

We haven't done a complete comparison, yet. But OMG, the weight difference! John! You have got to try a new pack!

My old pack weighs nearly 7 pounds. The lightest of the new ones is only 3 pounds.

And congrats on the losing of bodyweight.
