It's mostly the time of year. It really depends a lot on the river and where the water is coming from - the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon comes from the bottom of a dam and is always 42 degrees (brrr!) in the upper stretches, but e.g. the Colorado River upstream quite a bit near Moab can be in the 60s. The air wasn't all that warm, either.
