Okay, as some of you know, John McCain came here to Durango last Friday, which to most of us Dems was kind of WTF because not only is Colorado polling something like +10 for Obama right now, this county voted for Kerry four years ago and just a few weeks ago registered more Dems than GOP for the first time. (We still have more independents than either.) Plus, there are less than 40,000 people in the county, although if you reach out to areas a couple of hours' drive, there are maybe 100,000. The McCain rally was to be held at the high school football field, not exactly a huge venue. So we got together - we being the county Dems - and put together a huge counter-rally (not a protest, but a positive pro-Obama rally).

But that's not what I wanted to talk about. See, we got a big boost from a front-page article in our local newspaper last Thursday, with the headline, "Dems Prepare for McCain's arrival," and today there was a letter to the editor from some offended Republican, who complained:
We love Durango, but are extremely ashamed of our newspaper. In my opinion, the Herald is now no better than The New York Times, Chicago Tribune and The San Francisco Chronicle.
I am sure the newspaper editor is just devastated by the comparison.

Ha! That's great. Totally devastated, I'm sure. :D

So, how did the rallies go?

Well, in fairness the Chicago Tribune does sort of completely suck since its "Hey, look, we're just like USA Today now, OH GOD PLEASE READ US, UNDER-40 DEMOGRAPHIC!" makeover--though our editorial board too has been harangued by furious Republicans that they've "lost their souls" for endorsing Obama, oh, and (sobs) LEAVE SARAH PALIN ALONE! *points and laughs*

Yeah, my husband and I are thinking about dropping our Tribune subscription since the redesign, but now I'm thinking we should stick with it for a little while in support of the endorsement. Wow, those Republicans have been spoiled for the last 150 or so years.

The new design still sucks, though.

I loathe the redesign: chaotic layout, insultingly dumbed-down stories, almost no local coverage whatsoever and still the editorial page insists on shoving Jonah Goldberg, John "If I keep up this faux-everyman bullshit long enough someone will crown me the new Mike Royko, right?" Kass and Dennis "THE CATHOLIC LEPRECHAUNS ARE TALKING TO ME, MOTHER!" Byrne down all our throats. I've been mulling dropping it as well but since they're probably getting a lot of right-wing flouncers as we speak, will stick with it like you for now.

I thought as much! My mother worked in Hammond until I was 15, and I've still got a bunch of relatives from Hammond to Portage. My husband and I just visited the Three Floyds brewery in Munster a few weeks ago--that was a blast.

Oh, and I can't read John Kass. He makes my skin crawl. I do read Dennis Byrne to point and laugh.

Dennis Byrne built a spaceship and started reporting from a separate galaxy quite some time ago, I think. John Kass I just want to punch in the face.

No one is safe from the liberal media.

I feel like a counter-rally is more interesting than a candidate visit - it shows real community grassroots activity.

P.S. I found this bit of liberal media (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/26/AR2008102601937.html?hpid=topnews) to be very intriguing!

Ahh, Durango, it is very liberal now. Come down here to the flatlands, woman, and feel the McCain love - not me, mind you, but piles of farmers. I'm trapped in McCain loving bean land out here.

Yes, damned dirty liberals! (and those who actually THINK!) 4TW!

Reporting in from the wilds of the Ozarks where you get only patches of blue in the big red sea.

My 78 year old Mom is totally for Obama. which will cancel her brother's vote, (my insane military retiree uncle) for McCain. He and his buds are convinced that Muslim Obama is going to fill government with "the brothers" and make Whitey pay.

When I heard McCain was going to be in Durango I couldn't believe it. He should have had his rally at the fairgrounds here in Cortez. He would have been very well received. If I wouldn't have worked I would have come to your counter rally. That would have been cool.

I kind of feel sorry for McCain ... since I don't dislike him.
But I question their stratagy of campaigning in Durango ...

But its kind of nice to see the republicans running the stupid campaign
for once. After Gore and Kerry, I've forgotten that Demecrats weren't
the only ones who could "snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory".

But because of economy, the only way Obama is going to loose is if
he were to do something extremely idiotic. Let's hope he doesn't
decide to dress up in camo and go goose hunting, or go tank driving,
between now and the election. :-)
