free libraries, free people

I am proud and delighted to live in a town where 300-400 people show up for the ribbon-cutting of the new public library. (Admittedly that's like, 2-3% of the population, okay, not so huge, but still.) And of course I was pleased to see lots of people we knew, because of course anyone worthwhile would want to come see the library on opening night, right? We even checked out a few things. Yay!

That's wonderful! And it comes on this recent news, that 2/3rds of Americans have a library card (http://www.healthnewsdigest.com/news/Family_Health_210/Two-Thirds_of_Americans_Have_a_Library_Card_printer.shtml). Libraries are here to stay.

That statistic hits me the same way voting rates do - it is trumpeted as something awesome, but shouldn't it be closer to 100%? How many Americans have a television, I wonder?

Okay, I shouldn't be cynical. And I have to say our new library is AWESOME.

I finally made it to the library Thursday... how long since it'e been open? couple months... and to my amazement... people were using it... a lot of people... playing chess... reading magazines... on the puters... in the stacks... you name it... and the best part... the old giant card catalog drawers on the wall:)

Isn't the card catalog stairway the most fabulous artwork EVER?
