I've started doing the NCAR telecommuting work, which requires me to login from a telnet-type window (ssh) to the Unix machines up there. I haven't used Unix in over 4 years, but it's amusing and amazing to me that I somehow subconsciously remember things. My fingers remember vi and elm even if my brain doesn't; if I think "how do I get to the end of the line?" I can't remember, but if I just want to get to the end of the line, my fingers type '$' and I'm there.

1. What does your first name mean?
It's the poetic form of the word for tree in Hebrew.

2. Middle?
It means ewe, or lamb.

3. Last?
It means star. Or the back of a boat. Or unyielding.

4. Put it together?
Take your pick.

5. If I were a boy?
I dunno.

6. Other oddities?
My parents chose this name at the last moment. I was going to be named 'Tamara'. My mom misspelled it on my birth certificate, and later corrected it.

7. Do I like it?
Now I do. I went through phases of liking it and not liking it when I was younger. I can't imagine being named anything else.

8. What do I like best?
I meet very few others. Most people think it's pretty.

9. What do I like least?
Nobody who sees it written first pronounces it correctly, and nobody who hears it first spells it correctly.

10. If I had to change it?
See #7. I can't imagine it. But I guess I'd take Ariel, or Lila. And I have a sneaking fondness for the name Jane, although I can't picture myself as a Jane at all.

Our play was reviewed, and the reviewer liked it a whole bunch. We worked really hard on it, so I'm pleased. Especially with this excerpt:

The comic villain of the piece, Chick "the Stick", is played so adroitly by Ilana Stern you want to chase her out of the kitchen long before Lenny finally does.

Oh yeah, I'm a great bitch. First person to mutter "typecasting" gets a thwack on the head.

I hate moving.
I hate moving.
I hate moving.

Status report: computer equipment and desks in new house. DSL gone, not coming back for two weeks, damn it. Futon couch, bookcases, and books in new house. Bed and most clothes still in apartment. Food and cooking stuff still in apartment. Everything still in boxes.

I hate moving.

Secret Diaries of George W.

I wish for peace. And for my nerdsholm to come back.

If Clinton were still president, we'd be making love, not war. Or at least, he would.

Bonfire party the other night with my redneck brothers-in-law and their redneck friends. Beer, whisky, bratwurst and...asparagus. O-kay. Take that, you yuppie scum.

My hair still smells like smoke.

So, I got the I-9 and other forms via FedEx from NCAR, my soon-to-be-employer-again, and I filled them out and sent them back along with my passport via FedEx, and then yesterday they returned my passport via FedEx. Or tried to.

See, we were home all morning. And I left to go to the bank, and saw a little notice propped up on the mailboxes saying, "we tried to deliver, but you weren't here, so come pick up your package at [inconvenient location]."

GRRRRRR. If the courier was able to get into the building, (which he actually shouldn't have been, without ringing the bell, which is what UPS does, and it works fine) then why the hell didn't he come upstairs and knock on the damn door?

Fortunately, this is a small town. We were heading out in the early afternoon and saw the FedEx truck parked a few blocks away. So I was able to get my passport (and give him a piece of my mind). Well, I guess it doesn't matter if he doesn't know what to do at the apartment building -- we're moving to our new house over the course of the next week or so.

Went out for a bike ride yesterday. Wonderful. Although perhaps I should have been less ambitious than to ride 30 miles for my first road ride in three months. The final five miles were somewhat less than wonderful.

It was a beautiful day, sunny and mid-50s, a perfect day to be outside. Ah, Colorado. You can go skiing one day and biking the next, without skiing on rocks or biking in a parka and Klondike boots. (Eat your heart out, [livejournal.com profile] ikkyu2.)

So the job finally got all settled -- telecommuting work for a group up at NCAR, my old workplace in Boulder. Except that the Human Resources Drones insist that I have to fill out an I-9 form -- proof I'm eligible to work in the US -- in person.

I have to drive 350 miles.
To fill out a stupid form.
And I used to work there four years ago!

Argghh. And the form has to be filled out, and proof furnished, within 3 days of starting the job, so I can't start work now with intention of visiting Boulder this summer.

But after two days of wrangling with them on the phone and by email, it looks as though they will grudgingly accept it if I overnight the filled-in form and my (original) passport to them. With luck, they might even send my passport back.

We went skiing yesterday, for the first time in, oh, four years. I was pleased to see that my mediocre technique has not suffered too much for the hiatus. Hopefully this summer I will discover the same about my climbing technique and my whitewater rafting technique.

Skiing is really just an excuse to get out during the winter. It was just so darn beautiful up there at Purgatory Durango Mountain Resort. Engineer Mountain looked like a big scoop of vanilla ice cream, lacking only the cherry on top. And the jaggedy peaks of the Weminuche, all snow-covered and imposing, stood out so starkly against the sky. There is nothing like the blue of the Colorado sky.

I'm hoping to get out into the backcountry soon, too. Right now the avalanche danger pointer is at mega-scary, but maybe a few weeks will help.

And oh, man, do I hurt today. But it's a good hurt.

It's snowing horizontally again.

The cold wind is coming right through the single-paned windows of our poorly-insulated apartment. Fortunately, we don't pay extra for the heat.

I think we'll go skiing tomorrow. Mmm fresh powdah.

I have a job. The telecommuting gig back up at NCAR finally made its way through the paperwork.

I have a house. Or will, in nine days. As the address is 333 E 13th St., we felt it appropriate to select 3/13/03 as closing day.

It appears that I'm reassembling something vaguely akin to a Real Life. But I draw the line at kids and a minivan, sorry.

It seems entirely probable, at this point, that I am not, in fact, going to die of this flu.

I realized I was getting better when I started becoming bored with mindless web browsing and slash reading, and started getting the urge to actually Do Something.

I'm sitting up. I'm posting to my livejournal. I'm playing around with cascading style sheets.

Hey, it's a start.
