Rented Being John Malkovich last night. My overriding thought was sheer envy at the creative minds that invented this story. It was much better than I had expected.
One of the great things about it is that it's set in this weird alternate universe where nobody is really surprised by the wackiness. WHich means they don't have to, e.g., waste lots of time trying to convince people they've really found a portal to Malkovich's mind--e.g. Maxine is immediately thinking how to profit from it.
Very few movies make that move--the Airplane/Police Squad movies take it even further but that becomes a world of slapstick.
Adaptation (in theaters now) is from the same creative crowd and is really impressive in being totally unlike that--a pretty much totally straight world devoted to upending movie conventions and self-referential "this is the story of how this story got written".
