the week (and the month) in running
Sep. 30th, 2013 04:47 pmI was just rereading my last post, in which I said that the next (this past) week would be a cutback, and I'd aim for upper 50s anyway, and AHAHAHA not really, apparently, because I hit a new mileage high for this cycle of 64.2 miles:
Monday - hilly 9.5 @9:06, AWHR 63% - this is normally a trail day for me but after yesterday's multiple thunderstorms and heavy rain I thought it best to stick to the roads.
Tuesday - 10.4 with planned 2x3 tempo, not great - I ran 2 easy with strides, 3 tempo, 2 easy, 2.5 tempo that should have been 3 but I was plummeting off pace, then easy home. I think I took the first set too fast: 7:23, 7:18, 7:16, because the second set was 7:25, 7:29, 7:mumble mumble at least I kept it under 8 minute pace. Ah, well! The average for the third set was 7:29 but if I'd kept at it for the whole mile it would have been much worse. AWHR 82% for tempo miles, pace 8:05 overall.
Wednesday - 10 hilly trail miles @10:40 (which is blindingly fast for my trail running), AWHR 68%
Thursday - 12.2 with strides and a fast finish @8:41, AWHR 70% - last 3 (uphill!) miles 8:35, 8:32, 8:23.
Friday - rest (all-day meeting in Silverton)
Saturday - 4.1 trail (jeep road) @ 9:50, AWHR 76% (probably elevated due to altitude) - I brought my running gear with me to the meeting and stopped at a jeep road I've run in before just to get a little trail(ish) running in.
Sunday - 18 @ 8:47, AWHR 68%. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE.
On Sunday I ran 18 to make up for last week's thunderstorm-shortened LR, and it went really great until just after 12 miles in when I took a digger that left me sprawled on the road with my breath knocked out of me. The storm had caused serious mudslides on that road, and I was crossing an area which had recently been re-opened but was still covered in dirt and rocks, and I must have tripped on a rock. I was lying there trying to catch my breath and not look too alarmingly dead when a car came around the corner and the woman in it immediately stopped, got out, and helped me to my feet. She offered to drive me home but I didn't want to do that twice in a row! Instead I accepted a ride to her house (just a few hundred feet away) where I cleaned the dirt out of my scrapes. Then I got back on the road and finished my run (though I fell AGAIN around mile 15, no idea why or how).
Anyway, my knees and hands are all scraped up but nothing hurts that badly. Maybe the worst is my chest. I landed right on my breasts (hey, they stick out) and I think I bruised a rib, because it's sore when I breathe deeply. Didn't bother me on the rest of the run, though.
Then today I ran an easy 8.3 (11:25 pace) on the trails, and everything ached a little but nothing hurt too badly. I decided not to do hill sprints because I still feel sore when I breathe hard, and when I was almost back home my knees and thighs started feeling sore and tired. I am probably going to defer my tempo planned for tomorrow until Wednesday. I don't want to put it off too long, though, because I want to run a 5K on Saturday.
Today's run put me at 254.3 miles for the month of September, which is an all-time high for me! (Not by much; last October I ran 252.8.)

Date: 2013-10-01 12:33 am (UTC)What I don't understand is how you, the general "you" of trail runners, don't fall a lot more often. Perhaps your trails are more even than mine, but I encounter people running in places where I am watching every step. I am a walker in the local regional parks, not a hiker, even less a runner, and I suspect that, dancing notwithstanding, my balance isn't fabulous. So I am both envious of and boggled by trail running.

Date: 2013-10-01 06:12 am (UTC)Uhm, keep an eye on your ribs and don't be a guy about it if the breathing soreness continues - my dad let a broken rib heal itself (not well, but by the time we found out, it was too late to do anything about it), because he didn't want to admit all was not well.
…Of course my mom and I had actually met my dad before, so I have no clue why we didn't just make him go to the doctor when he complained of soreness after a fall, tsk :)
Yay, Silverton, home of yummy burgers and cute dogs!

Silverton was awesome! And we saw a moose walking right down the road there - it looked just like the opening credits for Northern Exposure!

Date: 2013-10-01 07:04 am (UTC)The fall is pretty scary. I hope your ribs are OK. Very fortunate that woman was able to bring you to her house to clean up and that you could resume.
And I know well enough that an 11:25 pace on trails means absolutely nothing... I've had some 12M/M about kill me on trails. :)
Solid training!!! Now, is it time to cut back? We shall see!

Date: 2013-10-02 12:38 am (UTC)People here are really nice and I was feeling almost guilty while I lay there thinking about how I was frightening all the drivers.
I'm hoping not to really cut back but to bounce around between about 60-65 until late November. We shall see - you know what they say about plans...
