I haven't been posting in a while, bad me, so you're forgiven if you've forgotten that I'm doing the Kendall Mountain Run tomorrow. I'm a little less prepared than I'd like to be, mostly because I fell really hard while trail running twice in successive weeks, then also fell hard mountain biking, and so I've been more cautious and doing less trail running than I really should have been. But I have been hiking and biking and running!

On top of Graham Peak

July 4th was on a Tuesday this year, and I didn't have Monday off, so instead of taking a long weekend for backpacking, on Monday night we drove a couple hours out to the National Forest on the far side of the Weminuche Wilderness, near Pagosa Springs, and spent the night in our camper van. Then the next day we hiked up 12,536' Graham Peak, which is more of a challenge than it sounds because there's no trail, or rather, the old trail has been abandoned for a very long time and has disappeared everywhere but on the ridge. We bushwacked our way through the forest to the ridge, then made our way to the peak, which as you see in my summit photo above is marked with a large cairn. There's also an informal register, which we duly signed; it looks like the peak gets maybe 6-8 groups a summer, and we were the second party to summit this year. The views from the top into the Weminuche are fabulous:

We also went hiking last Sunday with some friends, up the Cave Basin trail toward the Emerald Lake Overlook, which alas we didn't quite reach because serious weather started rolling in, and we were disinclined to be hit by lightning. Still, it was a fun time and super-gorgeous:

We've started to work on our mountain biking in anticipation of September's Telluride-to-Moab ride, so we did the Endlich Mesa ride again. Unlike last year we didn't go to Stump Lake (crossing those nasty snowmelt creeks) but instead rode all the way to the trailhead. At the top we sheltered under some trees during a brief rain shower and ate lunch, then headed back downhill, where we were surprised to discover that the storm that had only skirted us up top had hammered the road lower down with enormous amounts of hail:

Oh, hail!

And of course, I've been running. I've been averaging about 37mpw over the past few months, which is less than I'd like, but adequate for fitness, especially with the biking and hiking in there. Most Tuesday evenings I join our running club for a track workout, which is always tough - running fast is hard! - but I'm sure it's making me a better runner.

The falling thing has been annoying, though. I was 3.5 miles into a very nice trail run, about to hit an intersection, and boom! Tripped on a rock or air or something, and there I was, sprawled in the trail, bleeding and queasy. I ran home very carefully and very slowly. Then the next week, boom! It happened again, and this time was worse because I was headed downhill. My knees are all scabby now, boo. I switched to road running for a while, but I felt as though I really needed some more trail running in prep for Kendall, so on Saturday I hit the trail again for a 12.5 mile run that included a couple of trail segments I'd never done before, going up and over a high ridge. It was tough, and beautiful, and best of all I DIDN'T FALL!

So, tomorrow I am getting up way too early and going up to Silverton (it's about an hour's drive) with a friend who is also running. Now that I've seen what the course is like (we drove the first three miles to get to the trailhead of our late-June overnight backpack) I don't think I can make sub-3; I'm hoping to come in somewhere around 3:30. But my main goal is to NOT FALL.
