ilanarama: me in Escalante (yatta!)

We moved into our new house! Okay, we moved in three weeks ago, but the settling in has been gradual and so I had been waiting to document things until we got a few more boxes unpacked. Even now, things are still not yet all in their proper places. My desk would have had to be disassembled to get it in through the narrow office doors, and it seemed to me to be too big for the space anyway, so I sold it on Craigslist and bought a smaller one from Pier 1 (which should be delivered this Friday). In the meantime I have my computer on a table, which is not ideal. Books are still in boxes as most of them had lived in the built-in bookcases in our old house. The landscaping and patio work is still in progress. (Noisily, from 7 am to 6pm Monday through Thursday. Ugh.)

Here is the front door. The dirt and trash on each side of the steps is at this moment being replaced by little plants and mulch and rocks. The large windows to the left are reflecting the ridge behind me, as is the rightmost window, but the tall windows on either side of the door show the crossbeam of the back patio roof, and the view beyond.

Front entry

This is our great room before we moved any of our furniture into it. The first view shows more of the floor and the wood stove, while the second shows details of the ceiling and the fans.

I finally figured out that in order to get a good picture of our spectacular kitchen island, I needed to close the pantry doors, because otherwise light comes in the pantry window and reflects off the polished surface. The granite on the island and the stove backsplash is called "Volcano" and we love how dramatic it looks! The sides of the island are done in the same metal that the oven hood is (and that our TV cabinet will be, when it gets finished, which it is not yet).

We put our easy chairs right in front of the big glass sliding doors. I have my coffee in the morning looking out at the view and reading the news on my phone. On this day, a mist had crept into the valley along the river:

This view angled to the northwest shows the snowy peak on the far left even better. That's Silver Mountain, which we have climbed.

And here is the view at night:

There were a few things still incomplete when we moved in, but just last week our dining-table light was delivered and installed. We had gone to the lighting shop in town that our builder had a deal with, and picked out the various fixtures for the exterior and the bathroom, but we were having trouble finding something we liked for the dining area. Finally I looked over at the store's foyer, which was a two-story entryway with a dramatic light hanging in it, and said, "I like that the best. Could we buy it?"

Turns out that the company that made it would be happy to make us one, too (for a truly unspeakable amount of money, of course), and so we ordered it, but the first one shipped to us broken, and the second, when it arrived, didn't have long enough cables to hang from our airplane-hangar ceiling. So we moved in without a light there, and we had debated just calling and canceling the light, because, do we really need a dramatic light over our dining table?

Then last week the electricians showed up with the new light (and a massive ladder!) and installed it, and it turns out - we totally do! Because it's gorgeous and honestly, I can't stop looking at it, it's so amazing. Of course photos don't do it justice, but here are a few, unlit and lit:

Yes, there is a bonus cat in that last photo. Lucy hid for a couple of days - she found a hole she could use to squeeze into the computer cabinet of Britt's desk - but now she's strutting about like she owns the place. (Which I guess she does.) In conclusion (yes, that is wine, I am a Philistine, stemmed glasses get knocked over and I have not yet bought real stemless wineglasses):

Life don't suck too bad.

Oh wow, the house itself looks beautiful (I do especially love the kitchen island's top. Also, I'm not sure if it's a trick of the light in the last photo, but I think it matches your cat? XP), but HOLY COW those views!

Congratulations on now being able to live in this gorgeous house, after all the delays!

Gorgeous house and even more gorgeous view!

We've just started direct flights into Denver, the kids have both moved out of the house, and I have a good friend living in Denver. I'm really wanting to make a trip out there on of these days!!!
