missionary ridge fire, one year later

Britt, his brother Clay, and I went hiking yesterday on Middle Mountain in the Weminuche Wilderness. The Missionary Ridge fire last year went raging up Middle Mountain, slightly toasting some parts, completely burning up some parts, and leaving some parts untouched.

The ranch visible in the valley of that photo is where Clay is caretaker. Lucky him!

Last summer we took the Polar Bear Express (http://www.polarbearexpress.ca/) to Moosonee (http://www.townofmoosonee.homestead.com/) through a couple hundred miles of muskeg and tamarack as far as the eye can see in both directions. There were a couple of burned-over stretches from fires roughly twenty and thirty years ago (at those latitudes things don't grow back very fast). For stretches of ten to fifteen minutes we rode through thousands of acres of burnt tamarack forest. Weird reflections from the windows of old, well-worn rail coaches prevented me from getting a lot of pictures worth keeping, but I remember the eerie feeling.
