ilanarama: a mountain (mountain)
[personal profile] ilanarama
Back now from a Labor Day weekend backpack that was rather more adventurous than we had intended, as an all-day rain on Saturday translated into snow on the mountains we planned to climb, and we discovered that a grassy slope + an inch or so of snow = the slipperiest surface known to man. Needless to say, grassading (= glissading down one of these slopes) ought to be considered an extreme sport.

But I'm not posting about this weekend's backpack yet. This post is to entice you to see the web page trip report I finally put together for our July 31-Aug 8 backpack, wherein we climb lots of really big mountains and hike over trailless passes and fish in remote lakes and stuff like that. Clicky click on the teaser picture to go read.

the inline pic looks amazingly like one of the lakes at Glendalough (not far south of my home)

Well, I guess we'll have to come visit you then. Bet it isn't surrounded by 13,000+ foot peaks, though.

Probably closer to 1,300+ feet, if you're really lucky. The country doesn't get any taller than about 3,500 maximum...

Ilanarama! too cute. On your journal page the upper case I next to the lower case l makes it look like llamarama. Which, come to think of it, would be a great name for a llama farm.

Beautiful stuff. How you have the time and energy to put all the pages together, let alone actually do the hiking and stuff, and then run the universe on top of that, I have no idea.

I have actually been doing lots of hiking lately myself, too. But, to Eleanor's puzzlement, no matter how fast we move or how high we climb, we never seem to get anywhere. The gym is a mystery to her -- it's like the place where the physical laws of the universe are suspended. So now, if I can just prop my laptop on the stairmaster and click on your piccies as I hike, it will be exactly like the real thing.

Just remember every once in a while to move the stairmaster into the shower, to properly simulate the outdoors environment.

And, just so you know, I've decided to cut back on running the universe.

Delegate. That's the key.

I wrote a nice long comment to this, but--alas!--LJ ate it.

So, here's the summarised version:

Britt has much more courage than I do (although, instead of cowardice, I like to call it self-preservation). And so do you. Pictures like the one of you going around that ragged, exposed corner... wow.

Also, how did the lecture on the flood of 1911 go?

In my case I think it's stupidity, rather than courage. But I've pretty much learned over the years that Britt has a fine sense of what is reasonable and what is unsafe. If he thinks something is doable, I will usually follow. If he declines to do something, or suggests that I don't, I usually listen!

The lecture will be next month. Still getting my notes together!
