I got my hair cut yesterday, and the guy who does my hair is doing this new thing now: he blow-dried my hair and then ironed it straight before cutting, so that he could line up and cut all the layers precisely. The thing is, my hair is thick and wavy-to-curly. I have never seen myself with straight hair before, and I couldn't stop staring at myself in the mirror. I mean, it is so totally smooth and straight. I look like a completely different person.
Husbands being what they are, I couldn't get a straight answer out of mine as to whether he preferred it straight or curly. When I told him I could buy a straightening iron and do it like this every day, he just laughed at me and pointed out that I never even bother to blow-dry it normally, and just walk around with wet hair until it dries, and did I really think I was going to spend that much time every day on my hair? He has a point.

Date: 2005-09-07 05:23 pm (UTC)i have very thick, albeit not wavy, hair, that i can't be bothered to blow dry. i always warn a new hairdresser it will take longer to dry than cut. one scoffed at me. "i have a special trick," she said.
so special, it took about 45 minutes to dry. some "trick." and it didn't even look all that special.

Date: 2005-09-07 05:55 pm (UTC)It's fun to be able to make it look different on occasion, which is why I own a straightening iron (and a far too expensive one, at that). But mostly I just aim the dryer at my head and hope for the best.

Date: 2005-09-09 04:48 am (UTC)I actually think the iron is almost more useful on shorter hair like mine -- I can use the same device to smooth my cowlicks, turn sections under like an old-fashioned bob, and flip other sections up! Mostly, it makes my hair look really smooth and takes no time at all because I have very little hair to work on. I can't imagine straightening a whole long head of hair. No patience, I tell ya!

Date: 2005-09-08 12:41 am (UTC)My hair is very thick and mildly wavy, and while I like how it looks straight, I never had the patience to blow it dry. But I bought a straightening iron a few months ago, and now I straighten my hair much more often than I ever did with a blow dryer. It's much faster, and IMO easier to do well, too. I have a lot of hair, and I can pretty much do my whole head in 5 minutes. Best beauty-related $100 I ever spent!

Date: 2005-09-09 01:58 am (UTC)I'll have to post photos of the straight/curly comparison.
