hunkering down
Dec. 28th, 2006 04:48 pmIt's finally started to snow; the storm that was predicted to hit yesterday mostly bypassed us and is whomping Denver instead. We're not expected to get near as much as they will, just as in the pre-Christmas storm that closed DIA for days, when we only got a couple of inches. (Not that this wasn't without drama, as some of you already know. More about that in another post.)
The interesting thing (to me) is that these storms really underline our dependency on Stuff What Is Shipped In. I was supposed to bring fruit and vegetable trays to the inlaws' for Christmas, and the grocery store - the huge, national-chain store - looked kind of like the Staniel Cay grocery on the day before the mailboat arrives. Okay, maybe not quite that bare. But there was only a tiny bit of fresh stuff, and what there was looked pretty pathetic indeed. This week they have barely restocked (and then been cleaned out), and it's looking as though what with New Year's holiday coming up, between that and the storm we won't be getting much else.
Well, I don't care. I've got a well-stocked pantry (okay, not as stocked as on the boat, but decent!) and booze in the liquor cabinet. And I have internet, of course (yay!) Blow, wind, crack your cheeks! Let it snow! And all that.

Date: 2006-12-29 12:57 am (UTC)It's actually relatively warm - it's one of these wet, thick snowfalls, I think. We're only supposed to get a few inches. Anyway, I have wood in the stove and a cat on my lap and Yuletide on the browser. :-)

Now there's a happy image. :-)

Date: 2006-12-29 01:12 am (UTC)My little town got more than any other in the area for the previous big storm, and we only just got our roads plowed today! They were carting it away in a fleet of dumptrucks!
I wonder if the new storm will fizzle.

Date: 2006-12-29 03:51 am (UTC)But all work / no play make Jack dull,
And since we've no place to go,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
It doesn't show signs of slacking,
Through your door I'll soon be hacking,
Now where did that Danny go?
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
When we finally say goodnight,
In our climactic chasing scene,
I'll be colored grey from frostbite,
In my hedge so labyrinthine!
Our expedition is slowly dying,
And the Thing's still multiplying,
But the world may never know;
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

Date: 2006-12-29 06:10 pm (UTC)Stuck in this old city now,
Where livin' ain't no fun.
Where steel and glass and concrete
Cancel out the wind and sun.
And I'm thinkin' of last winter now,
When we walked hand-in-hand,
In the trails of the Colorado Rockies.
The wind sang us a lullaby.
The snow was thick as cream.
And icicles were chandeliers
Like crystals in a dream.
And the streams were strips of diamonds
And the hills were white as snow
And a bear ate all our soybeans in the night.
Oh, Colorado's calling me ...
From her hillsides and her rivers
And her mesas and her trees.
When blizzards snap the powerlines
And all the toilets freeze ...
In December in the Colordo Rockies.
We had time and space and freedom,
We had love and peace to spare.
Though we ran out of things to smoke
And say and eat and wear.
And the morning of the avalanche,
The Yeti kidnapped Blanche,
And took her to his cave up in the Rockies.
Oh, Colorado's calling me ...
From her glaciers and her canyons
And her badlands and ravines.
When infectious hepatitis
Was all that came to stay,
In January in the Colorado Rockies.
Baby didn't die until
We burned up all our wood.
Considering we ate her raw,
She tasted pretty good!
Then the fascist health inspectors
Dug us out and mailed us home ...
Except for Blanche who wouldn't leave her man.
Oh, Colorado's calling me ....
(Hey! You!)
From her mountains and her rivers
And her meadows and her trees.
They tell me I'll be cured soon,
Thawed, and ready to return ...
When it's April in the Colorado Rockies.

Date: 2006-12-29 04:36 am (UTC)I read this as "And I have intercourse (yay!). I was all like 'You said it, girl!' Nothing better to while the days away in the dead of winter. Then I re-read it and now it's not so exciting anymore.

Date: 2006-12-29 06:12 pm (UTC)I kind of like snow, actually. I like weather that varies from season to season. I like sitting on my comfy couch with the kitty on my lap and a fire in the wood stove while it blizzards outside!

Happy New Year!!
Re: Great Image
Date: 2007-01-05 05:28 pm (UTC)Yeah, I can't see living in a place without winter at all. Alaska might be a bit much because of the darkness (although I kind of wanted to move up there after visiting in summer 1993) but I like living in Colorado.
