I went for a run this evening, through the neighborhoods to the south and then across the highway to a park and the river trail, where I turned west - and headed straight into the most gorgeous sunset ever, vivid pink and gray waves of cloud over the mountains. I wished I had a cell phone with me so I could call Britt and say, "You have to go outside and look at the sunset!" It was phenomenal.

The run was pleasant, and then I got home, and as soon as I stepped in the door, Britt said, "You must have seen the sunset! Wasn't it amazing?" It turns out that the pink wash of light in the window had been so remarkable that he went outside, and watched the sunset in its full glory. And it made me so happy - all I could think of was, "Yay! He got to see the sunset, too!"

So much of logistics to sort out still, but we were thinking of getting hitched some time next (this?) year, for the sheer heck of it, and then going on with our separate lives until we can actually settle somewhere together.

I love that in people. I think I ought to do a post where I list friends & other peeps I'm happy for.

Hah, I know lots of couples who have done that. It's a hazard of academia, I think, when you have to go where the jobs or postdoc or school is in your weird tiny field. For two years after their marriage, Mark lived in Colorado while Monica lived in Germany; my old housemate Leila lived in New York State while her husband lived in Hawaii for, I don't know, YEARS.

I feel so old-fashioned because we lived together before getting married, rather than waiting to live together until YEARS afterward!

We are so sweet! It's really great to be in long-term settled-in love.

And yeah, I didn't do a long one or a fast one, but it felt good, and my lungs felt clear. I guess I didn't have the plague after all.

That sounds wonderful. I always love calling AHH over when I see a beautiful sunset from the window.

Yeah, nice things are nicer when shared, aren't they. And PS I hope you're not too affected by the floods.

On (what I think is) a related note, something I adore about Steve is that he finds happiness in other people's happiness. He's pleased as punch when I'm happy about something, and he grins like an idiot when he sees Eleanor excited about something.

Yes, that's so important! I think that's part of - you know, there is the selfish bit where you want the other person to be happy because of how it will affect you, and then there is the unselfish bit where if you truly care about someone, you want them to be happy because, they are happy! Yay! And I think it shines through.

Lucky you!

I was out walking and watched the very same sunset here
(an hour later?).

It wasn't anything to write home about here ...
bay area sunsets rarely are to outstanding,
not compared to the ones I've seen elsewhere in the country.

And alas, I've got no one to write home to about it anyway.

We actually don't usually have great sunsets, because our view to the west is blocked by the mountains. And it's usually either clear or overcast - I think some combination of clouds is nicer for sunset!

And yeah, having someone to enjoy it with is a big part.
