Britt's neck is doing better, although he's still healing up, but I think we are good to go. If it ever stops raining, we will head to Rotorua tomorrow (Rotorua, that's the name! And send your troubles down the drain!) and spend a couple of days soaking in hot pools and learning about Maori culture and geothermal energy, possibly not to include Christmas as the entire country apparently shuts down. Thence to Tongariro National Park to hike around hopefully inactive volcanoes, and then to Waitomo for the glowworm caves and something intriguingly called "black-water rafting." Updates to come as I get net access.

Happy holidays of whatever sort you celebrate. I am personally planning to celebrate get-the-hell-out-of-Dodge day.

The Polynesian Spa resort/baths thingy were a nice relaxing sort of a place, especially after being flushed down a cave in a car tyre.

Good to here he's getting better! I'll look forward to hearing about your adventures in Rotorua and Waitomo. :)

When you get to Rotorua there's a park with boiling mud pools, which is both free and won't shut over the Christmas break. (Also, boiling mud pools in your park = totally awesome.)

Come to think on it, you can go zorbing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zorbing) at a place right near Rotorua, which you might enjoy. It's less extreme than it sounds but everyone I saw go on it had fun.

"Black water rafting" sounds like paddling through a water treatment plant.

I'm sure you've seen the following already ...
I think I had it memorized by the end of my trip:

"Rain"

It rained and it rained and it rained and it rained;
the average fall was well maintained,
and when the tracks were simply bogs,
it started raining cats and dogs.

After a drought of half an hour
we had a most refreshing shower,
and then the most curious thing of all:
a gentle rain began to fall.

Next day was also fairly dry,
save for the deluge from the sky,
which wetted the party to the skin,
and after that the rain set in.

Beats me ... I googled the first line to cut and paste the
correct text ... all the sources list it as "annonymous".

You'll probably see a framed copy posted on the wall of
just about every tramping hut you stay in. :-)
