Meanwhile, it snowed here last night. In Coastal California. *big eyes* Didn't stick, of course, not at my elevation, but still. Snow. Coming down. In flakes.
Woah.
And when I left Suzi's place at 10:30pm, there was enough ice on my windshield that it took a borrowed scraper (I don't even own one, not one that'll deal with real ice) and about ten minutes' work before I could see well enough to get home. *is a complete weather wuss*
All y'all cold climate types, you can keep the frozen-precipitation weather in all its forms, and welcome to it.
It's nicer when it falls as little pretty white flakes that slide off your body! Rain gets you wet when you walk back home through it and you didn't bring an umbrella because it's January, and that stormy-looking sky augurs snow, right?
It isn't even cold. 40F. Phooey. I mean, when it's sunny out the 40F feels really warm - I go running in shirtsleeves - but when it's all cloudy and precipitating in the winter it's supposed to be colder than that.
We've got it! Come over here and get all you like. I don't remember it being this bad in years, and now it's Stock Show weather - hovering around 5, and we picked up another inch. Cold, cold, cold all weekend long.
Wowie! I feel like I'm in the Colorado Banana Belt. I went running yesterday in a t-shirt, no lie. It is supposed to get colder for the weekend after this storm clears up, and maybe we'll get snow when the temperature drops overnight, but right now this weather reminds me of a Baltimore winter.
We've got the fricken COLD blast of arctic air thing going on here right now. It's supposed to get into the low 20's tonight ... It'll be freezen some of the citris crops around here.
Funny you guys aren't getting it ... since you're only a few mountain ranges over.
We haven't had a cold blast like this in at least 10 years. Maybe ... I forget when that last one was ... I might have been 1994 (I remember the building I was working in then).
Hopefully Colorado weather will be back to normal by June, when I'm out there.
We'll be back in mid-late June, I don't know when. We're heading out on the boat in March with plans to be back sometime June. But if you're here you are welcome to stay with us! We owe you!
I'll be out your way, sort of, in another four weeks - I just made reservations to join Oren at Heavenly for skiing for a couple of days. We're flying in to Reno and then driving back to Santa Clara with him to spend the night (you were at his place once, weren't you?) and then back home from SJC.
The AHA National Homebrew Competition Finals are in Denver on June 21-23 ... so I'm thinking of driving there and back, and seeing and doing stuff one the way there and back.
So hopefully you guys will be back at the end of June, and I can see you as I make the journey back.
I'll let you know as the event draws closer.
And yes, I was at your brothers Oren's place. Although I can't remember where it is exactly.
Hopefull we'll see you when you're here.
You might be here for "Beerapalooza", which is from Feb 10-18th.
Hee, wildcelticrose who lives in Seattle posted photos. I guess they are not used to actual winter weather!
And as I have replied elsewhere, you're talking about graupel, which is what you get when a snow crystal falling through the cloud collides with supercooled water droplets that freeze onto the crystal. This process is called riming, and it results in a soft roundish blob. We don't get this much - mostly just in fall and spring, otherwise temperatures aloft are too cold.
We finally did get some snow (about an inch) and now it's cold and clear and pretty.
I read all about it on Wikipedia! I really liked the graupel, it was light and dry and bouncy. I didn't end up drenched like I do with our light snows in Maryland.
We might get flurries, now that the weather is more like winter... time will tell!
