I can hardly imagine you boatless... unless of course you're on a bicycle. Yes. Ilana on a bicycle, being awesome; the rest of us, being the tiniest tree frogs. Now the universe makes sense again.
Sort of. We want to do more international traveling; we have friends in New Zealand (actually, they were here and housesitting while we were on this last trip) and for our first excursion we are planning to visit them. Not coincidentally, they have a boat that they have offered to us for our use!
Heh, I can probably guess which New Zealanders, although I'm not going to name names in a public post. I hope you enjoy the new phase, and the Antipodean sailing.
sportsmobile conversions are done in my hometown in Indiana. I don't know the people personally, but I think I went to high school with their daughter.
You bet! Next up will probably be New Zealand, and we are hoping to buy a Sportsmobile or other 4x4 camper van and do a big trip across the Canadian Rockies.
Wow, Ilana. I'm happy for you, but I will certainly miss the vicarious thrills of your cruise reports!
Regarding Sportsmobiles, I have one :-), although not one of the mega-$$$ 4x4 ones. We've got one built on a '95 Dodge van platform that we acquired from my parents, with very low miles. You're probably already familiar with badgertrek.com, but if not you should point Britt at it; I'm sure he would find the "what we had to fix" entries enlightening.
For the record, I've been very happy so far with our Sportsmobile, and if there's any non-4x4-specific questions I can answer, let me know.
My 4x4 is an ancient '89 Dodge Raider (rebadged Mitsu. Montero) with 200k+ miles on it.
Wow, thanks for the badgertrek site - we hadn't seen it before. And haha, I didn't know you had one!
Yeah, we really need 4x4 for the kind of trips we do. We used to have a VW Westfalia Synchro (4x4), which was great, although we had a lot of mechanical problems and the engine was so small that going over passes was...well, we could walk faster.
You're welcome for the link! I think you guys will find it very informative and useful. Certainly the power-plants they offer for the 4x4 Sportsmobiles will take you wherever you want to go. Just be prepared for the gasoline bill :-) Our Sportsmobile has a 5.2L V-8 which does just fine on the open road with the van fully loaded with 5 passengers and the 20 gallon water tank filled. We get 14-15 mpg. Doing 4x4 though, I would probably want the V-10 or the diesel options they offer. I'll look forward to seeing how this progresses. Please keep me regularly updated!
I know this is part of preparing for the new adventure. You at least made it "out there" for awhile. I'm still dreaming.
Enjoy New Zealand. My wife and I had a great time when we were down there in 1999. Knowing my luck, you will be there the next time I'm passing through Colorado.
BTW, I'm done with AF trips this year. Next is a fun trip to Japan at the end of the month.
