Wow, Ilana. I'm happy for you, but I will certainly miss the vicarious thrills of your cruise reports!
Regarding Sportsmobiles, I have one :-), although not one of the mega-$$$ 4x4 ones. We've got one built on a '95 Dodge van platform that we acquired from my parents, with very low miles. You're probably already familiar with badgertrek.com, but if not you should point Britt at it; I'm sure he would find the "what we had to fix" entries enlightening.
For the record, I've been very happy so far with our Sportsmobile, and if there's any non-4x4-specific questions I can answer, let me know.
My 4x4 is an ancient '89 Dodge Raider (rebadged Mitsu. Montero) with 200k+ miles on it.
Wow, thanks for the badgertrek site - we hadn't seen it before. And haha, I didn't know you had one!
Yeah, we really need 4x4 for the kind of trips we do. We used to have a VW Westfalia Synchro (4x4), which was great, although we had a lot of mechanical problems and the engine was so small that going over passes was...well, we could walk faster.
You're welcome for the link! I think you guys will find it very informative and useful. Certainly the power-plants they offer for the 4x4 Sportsmobiles will take you wherever you want to go. Just be prepared for the gasoline bill :-) Our Sportsmobile has a 5.2L V-8 which does just fine on the open road with the van fully loaded with 5 passengers and the 20 gallon water tank filled. We get 14-15 mpg. Doing 4x4 though, I would probably want the V-10 or the diesel options they offer. I'll look forward to seeing how this progresses. Please keep me regularly updated!
