Photo added! And, alas, no mama bear. There was an article in the paper just this morning that quoted a local state wildlife officer as saying that they'd seen lots of cubs wandering on their own, presumably because their mamas couldn't feed them in these drought conditions.

Britt threw rocks at it and chased it back to the closest bit of mountain park, which is what you're supposed to do. The idea is to make it not want to mix with people and eat their trash.
I am not sure where he wandered down from! It's not that far to the national forest, though. And this has been a very bad year for bears in town. They are knocking over garbage cans all over, walking through the neighborhoods...there was a late freeze and then a drought, and so the nuts and berries they usually depend on are sparse.
Hee. My honey went after it with rocks and wished he had his pellet gun. I suspect though that all our scare tactics won't keep him away for long, and sooner or later he'll get hit by a car or shot by the Dept. of Wildlife for being a nuisance.

You wouldn't laugh so hard if you saw the steaming pile he left on the lawn! Wild bear scat isn't so bad, usually (hi, I hike a lot in bear country) but trash-eating bears, yuck.
!!! indeed! What a great photo. It looks like the bear's just nonchalently ambling along.
Also, I am glad your cat was sensible and not at all like that ccrazy cat that chased a bear up a tree (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/06/060613-cat-bear.html).
Aw, that poor scared bear! Our cat usually chases much bigger cats, and small dogs, but Britt lifted her up so she could see the bear out the window, and as soon as the bear made eye contact with her she "turned inside out" and LEAPED out of his arms and scurried under a bed.
